Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a first-person shooter video game developed by Infinity Ward and released in 2007. The player alternatively assumes the roles of silent protagonists Sgt. "Soap" MacTavish of SAS and Sgt. Paul Jackson of USMC as they and their respective squads fight in fictional military conflicts in modern day Russia and the Middle East. The game is divided into missions which are, except for two flashbacks, played in chronological order. The gameplay is very cinematic with a large amount of scripted sequences and continuous gunfights.

[edit] Cpt. Price

  • [helping Soap to stand up after an explosion] On your feet, soldier! WE ARE LEAVING![1]
  • [catching Soap before he falls off the helicopter ramp] Gotcha!
  • I was just a "Leftenant" back then, doing some wetwork. Chernobyl. Christmas for the bad guys. Even a decade later, lot of 'em still used it to get their hands on nuclear material. A lot of them - including one Imran Zakhaev. Of course we couldn't just let that happen. Cash for spent fuel rods? Huhm... That's one hell of a recipe for destruction. It was the first time our government had ordered an assassination order since the Second World War... I was under the command of Captain MacMillan.
  • [upon hearing that the Ultranationalists are forcing them to surrender] Ignore that load of bollocks, their counterattack is imminent.
  • These night vision goggles make it too easy.
  • [Soap hits a far away target with a sniper rifle] Nice. Captain MacMillan would be impressed.

[edit] Gaz

  • [pulling out shotgun] I like to keep this for close encounters.[1]
  • We've got Nikolai! We're takin' him to the safehouse in Hamburg! ETA oh-seven-hundred hours. Out!
  • Soap! Get off the minigun! We're falling back!
  • Useless wanker!!
  • [watching AC-130 gunship wreak havoc on enemy forces] That's bloody outrageous, mate!

[edit] Lt. Vasquez

  • Marines! Spotters have a possible fix on Al-Asad in a building at the west end of this town. We're gonna secure the perimeter and grab Al-Asad. Oorah! Lock and load...
  • Roger that, HQ. Out. Heads up! I just got word that the target is half a klick east of here in a TV station. We're gonna move out on foot, and take down the package there. Move out.
  • Room clear! Move up! Al-Asad should be on the second floor!
  • Fall in, marines. Stay frosty.
  • Alpha, let's take the stairs and hit their flank! Bravo, give us covering fire! Let's go, Jackson! Follow me! Come on, Jackson! Move it!
  • Command, the LZ is secure, bring in the engineers and let's get this tank moving.
  • Listen up. We don't have much time to get this tank outta here. We'll take up defensive positions around the bog here, here, and here, and buy the engineers some time to get the tank moving. Oorah?
  • Command, this is Bravo Six. War Pig is en route. We're not missing this party.
  • Shut up and keep 'em pinned down!

[edit] Cpt. MacMillan

  • Too much radiation, we'll have to go around.
  • Follow me and keep low.
  • Careful... there's pockets of radiation all over this area. If you absorb too much, you're a dead man.
  • Contact. Enemy patrol dead ahead.
  • Stay low and move slowly, we'll be impossible to spot in our ghillie suits.
  • Take one out when the other's not looking.
  • [after sniping an enemy] Good night!
  • [the player makes a mistake and gets the two spotted] Are you daft, lad?!
  • There's more cover if we go around.
  • Four tangos inside, don't even think about it.
  • Wait there. Tango by the car.
  • Take him out quietly, or just let him pass. Your call.
  • We've got a lookout in the church tower... and a patrol coming from the north.
  • Let's move up for a better view.
  • Do you have a shot on the lookout?
  • [after you sniped the lookout] Beauuutiful!
  • Target approaching from the north.
  • [after you sniped the enemy] Tango down.
  • Enemy helicopter, get down!
  • Stay in the shadows.
  • Get down! Now!
  • Easy lad... there's too many of them, let'em go. Keep a low profile and hold your fire.
  • Try to anticipate their paths.
  • If you have to maneuver, do it slowly and steady, no quick movements.
  • OK, let's move. Nice and slow.
  • [upon seeing two men dumping dead bodies into a lake] Looks like they've already eliminated the men they couldn't buy out...
  • Taking them out without alerting the rest isn't going to be easy, but then again, neither is sneaking past them. That's your call.
  • Stay low, he's mine... Oi, Suzy!.. [hits the terrorist with the butt of his rifle] ...that's how it's done, let's go.
  • It's a bloody convention out there. Get ready to move on on my signal. Stay right behind me.
  • Just wait here a moment. When they leave, crawl out and stay low.
  • Patience, laddie, don't do anything stupid.
  • [after shooting a sniper] Beautiful!
  • Don't let your guard down, we're not there yet.
  • Leave it alone, it's a wild dog.
  • Pooch doesn't look too friendly, keep your distance, no need to attract unnecessary attention.
  • [about Pripyat] Look at this place, fifty-thousand people used to live in this city, now it's a ghost town. I've never seen anything like it.
  • [after shooting down a helicopter with Lieutenant Price] Good night, you bastard.
  • Leftenant Price, the meeting is underway. Enemy transport sighted entering the target area. The wind's getting a bit choppy, you can compensate for it or you can wait it out, but he might leave before it dies down. It's your call. Remember what I taught you, keep in mind variable humidity and the bullet's flight path. At this distance you will also have to take the Coriolis effect into account.
  • [a Mil Mi-28 obscures the view of the meeting] Argh! Where did he come from? Patience, laddie, wait for a clear shot.
  • Target down. I think I saw his arm fly off, nice work, Leftenant, we got him. Shock and blood loss will take care of the rest. [enemy helicopter approaches] Shit, they're on to us! Take out that helicopter, it will buy us some time.
  • [upon being hit by the helicopter] Ah bollocks, my leg's all messed up, I can't move! [coughs] Sorry mate, you're gonna have to carry me.
  • The word stealth means nothing to you, does it?

[edit] Others

  • News caster: After heavy fighting today, U.S. Marines began to push into the city where Al-Asad is making his last stand. Fighting has intensified in the capital city. Anti-aircraft fire and burning buildings light the night.
  • Marine: The tank's on the other side of that overpass. Where the hell are you!?
  • SSgt. Griggs: Watch your six Devil Dog!
  • U.S. Command: Advance team is pinned down in a hot area. They're popping green smoke to indicate their position.
  • Outlaw Two-Five: This LZ is too hot. We'll circle back in 3 minutes.
  • U.S. Command: Outlaw, be advised, we have a situation here, over. Seal Team Six has located a possible nuclear device at Al-Asad's palace to the west. NEST teams are on the way. Until the device is verified safe, all forces are to fall back to the east, over.
  • U.S. Command: All U.S. forces be advised, we have a confirmed nuclear threat in the capital! NEST teams are on site, attempting to disarm. I repeat...! [static, as the weapon detonates]
  • Russian Ultranationalist: [through megaphone, with a heavy Russan accent] Surrender at once and your lives will be spared. I assure you will make right choice given the circumstances.
  • SSgt. Griggs: [about Soap disguised as a Russian Ultranationalist] Man, you look like a clown in that outfit. Good thing you're up here 'cause you look nothing like a Russian.
  • Victor Zakhaev: [his last words, in non-subtitled Russian] You are all soon going to die anyway. [shoots himself]
  • SSgt. Griggs: [after Zakhaev's son shoots himself] Shit. Kid's got some issues.
  • Imran Zakhaev: Our so-called leaders...prostituted us to the West. Destroyed our culture...our economies...our honor. Our blood has been spilled on our soil. [picture of Zakhaev son's dead body] My blood...on THEIR hands... THEY are the invaders. All U.S. and British forces will leave Russia immediately... or suffer the consequences. [picture of a nuclear missile]
  • SAS: [after the player kills the first enemy on the epilogue mission] Weapons free.
  • SAS: Tango down!
  • SAS: [to the hostage, before jumping off the exploding plane in the epilogue mission] We made a little jump!

[edit] Dialogue

Gaz: Good news first. The world's in great shape. We've got a civil war in Russia, government loyalists against Ultranationalist rebels, and 15,000 nukes at stake.
Cpt. Price: Just another day at the office.
Gaz: Khaled Al-Asad. Currently the second-most powerful man in the Middle East. Word on the street is that he's got the minerals to be top dog down there. Intel's keeping an eye on him.
Cpt. Price: And the bad news?
Gaz: We've got a new guy joining us today, fresh out of Selection. His name's Soap.

Sgt. Kent [about Soap]: It's the F.N.G., sir. Go easy on him, sir, it's his first day on the regiment.
Cpt. Price: Right, what the hell kind of name is 'Soap', eh? How'd a muppet like you pass Selection?

Gaz: Rules of engagement, sir?
Cpt. Price: Crew expendable.

Gaz: Captain Price, Al-Asad has just executed President Al-Fulani on national television.
Cpt. Price: The Americans have plans for Al-Asad. And it's too late to do anything for Al-Fulani. But in less than three hours, code name Nikolai will be executed in Russia.
Gaz: Nikolai sir?
Cpt. Price: Nikolai is our informant in the Ultranationalist party. He supplied us with the intel for the cargo ship operation. Nikolai is in hell right now, and we're gonna walk him out. We take care of our friends. Let's go.

Cpt. Price: The Loyalists are expecting us half a klick to the north. Move out.
Gaz: Loyalists eh? Are those the good Russians or the bad Russians?
Cpt. Price: Well they won't shoot us on sight, if that's what you're asking.
Gaz: Yeah, well that's good enough for me sir.

Cpt. Price: Not so fast. Remember Beirut? You're with us.
Sgt. Kamarov: Hmm... I guess I owe you one.
Gaz: Bloody right you do.

Sgt. Kamarov: Look. The final assault has already begun. With a little bit more of your sniper support, we are sure to be victiorious. Captain Price-
Gaz: (grabs Kamarov, holds him over the ledge) Enough sniping! Where is the informant?
Sgt. Kamarov: (shouts indistinctly in Russian)
Gaz: WHERE-IS-HE?!?
Sgt. Kamarov: The house! The house at the northeast end of the village!
Gaz: That wasn't so hard, now was it? Now go sit in the corner. (knocks Kamarov unconscious)

Lt. Vasquez: Second squad on me to the target building. Move!
Marine 1: Move it! Move it!
Marine 2: Set up the blocking positions! Let's go!
Lt. Vasquez: There's the target building! Left side door breach! Stack up!

Lt. Vasquez: All call signs, check the bodies. We need a positive ID on Al-Asad.
Marine 1: Negative ID over here sir!
Marine 2: No sign of Al-Asad here, sir!
Lt. Vasquez: HQ, this is Red Dog. Target building is secure, but we don't have Al-Asad. Over.

Lt. Vasquez: Target building in sight.
Marine: We've got the TV station locked down and surrounded, sir.
Lt. Vasquez: Good. Get in position to breach.

Marine 1 [pointing at the passing Abrams tanks]: Yeah! There goes our boys!
Marine 2: Oorah!
Marine 3: Oorah!

SSgt. Griggs: Hold your fire! Friendlies coming out! [passes through door] No sign of Al-Asad, sir.
Lt. Vasquez: Alright. Fall in, marines. Stay frosty.

SSgt. Griggs: I think he's in there. I hear him.
Lt. Vasquez: Do it!
[a Marine breaches the door]
Marine 1: Clear!
Marine 2: Clear!
Marine 3: Room clear!
Marine 4: He's not here.
Marine 5: It's on a loop... The broadcast is a recording.
SSgt. Griggs: Yeah... Score one for military intelligence!
Lt. Vasquez: Griggs, turn that off.
SSgt. Griggs: Roger that. I got somethin' better anyway.
Lt. Vasquez: Command this is Red Dog. TV station secure. No sign of Al-Asad. The broadcast is a recording, over.
SSgt. Griggs [switches broadcast for hip hop music]: Yeah! Oorah!
Lt. Vasquez: Roger that Command. Out. Marines! Rally up! We got a new assignment. Get your gear, and get ready to move out. Let's go!

Command: Roger on location. Map grid 27619.
Lt. Vasquez: Bravo Six copies. Over.
Command: Bravo Six, we have an Abrams dead in the water. Call sign, "War Pig". Lt. Vasquez, your unit is shotgun.
Lt. Vasquez: Copy. Bravo is inbound. Tell "War Pig" to standby. We're on our way. Out.

Lt. Vasquez: Alpha company's tank is stuck half a click north of here. We've gotta hustle! Let's go!
Marine 1: Move it! Move it!
Marine 2: Clear! Keep moving up! [is shot and killed]
Marine 3: Ambush! Ambush!
Marine 4: Contact right! Contact right!
Lt. Vasquez: Get some suppression fire on that building! We have to move forward! Keep moving forward!

Lt. Vasquez: Alright, Jackson. You and Roycewicz head upstairs! We'll cover this entrance, go!
Marine 1: Watch your fire! We're on the second floor!
Marine 2: Roger that. Shifting fire.

Marine: Clear!
Lt. Vasquez: Hit their flank with their machine gun! Cut em' down! Shoot 'em through the wall! [after floor is cleared] Good job!
Command: Be advised, more enemy troops are converging on the tank. Get there ASAP!
Lt. Vasquez: Roger that! We're working on it - out!

SSgt. Griggs: Sir! There's a ton of em' out there!
Lt. Vasquez: Shut up and keep em' pinned down!
SSgt. Griggs: Roger that, suppressing FIRE!

Marine 1: We have contacts on the overpass!
Lt. Vasquez: UAV recon has spotted enemy tanks coming this way! Private West! Get on the roof and hit 'em with the Javelin!
Pvt. West: Yes sir!
[West is shot and killed]
Marine 2: Pvt. West is down! West is down! Jackson, get the Javelin!
Lt. Vasquez: Jackson, pick up the Javelin so you can take out those tanks!

Marine 1 [after the first enemy tank is destroyed]: Nice shot!
Marine 2 [after all tanks are destroyed]: OK, that's the last of 'em.
Marine 3 [after passing through wire fence]: Bravo Six! We're taking heavy fire on our position north of the overpass! Where the hell are you?!
Lt. Vasquez: We're almost there. Hang on!

Lt. Vasquez: Alpha Six, what's your status? Over.
Marine 1: We're still surrounded sir! There's just the four of us left! But the tank's still OK! Over!
Lt. Vasquez: Contacts to the east and more flanking to the south! Hold the perimeter!
War Pig: Bravo Six, this is War Pig! The main gun's offline but we still have our machine gun!
Lt. Vasquez: They're movin' in with detpacks! Don't let 'em close to the tank!

Command: Bravo Six, you have more enemy forces forming to your west.
Lt. Vasquez: Charlie-Two, Bravo Six! Requesting air support for fire mission. Over!
Command: Uh, negative, Bravo Six. There's an enemy ZPU to the south of your position. Until you take it out, we can NOT risk sending in any more choppers, over.
Lt. Vasquez: Jackson! Find that ZPU and take it out so we can get some air support! Lopez! Gaines! Cover him! All right, let's move out! Secure the western approach, move!

Lt. Vasquez: Jackson! I've got air support on the way, but they need our exact location. Plant the IR beacon and get their attention. Out.
Lt. Vasquez: They've got that building buttoned up! We need to call in the air support! Jackson! Plant the IR beacon!
Marine: Where is the air support?
Marine: We can't take that building without some air support! Jackson! Plant the beacon!
Lt. Vasquez: Those machine guns are rippin' us apart! Jackson! Plant the IR beacon and get those choppers over here! Now!
Cobra Pilot [after the beacon is planted]: OK, positive ID on your sparkle! We're comin' in hot from the northeast. Standby.

Cobra Pilot 1: Uh, two, do you see anyone left down there?
Cobra Pilot 2: Negative. We got 'em.
Cobra Pilot 1: Roger that. All targets have been destroyed and we're outta here. Good luck, boys. Out.

Lt. Vasquez: Command, LZ is secure. Bring the engineers and let's get this tank moving.
Command: Roger that. They're on the way. Good work. Out.
SSgt. Griggs: Squad, regroup at the tank, let's go!

Cpt. Price [response to erratic beeping]: What the bloody hell is that? Incoming missile! Hang on!
Blackhawk Pilot: Break left! Break left! Mayday, mayday! This is Hammer Six-Four! We are going down two miles south of Waypoint Five!

Cpt. Price [to Soap]: You're still in one piece. Get up. [helicopter wreck explodes] Come on, we need to get movin' before the search parties get here. Casualty report.
Gaz: Paulsen and both pilots are dead sir.
Cpt. Price: Bugger... All right, the extraction point is not far from here. Let's move out.

Baseplate: Bravo Six, this is Baseplate. AC-130 gunship support is on the way, but it will take some time before they will be in a position to assist. Over.
Cpt. Price: Copy. Bravo Six out.
Gaz: An AC-130, eh? I haven't worked with one of those in a while.
Cpt. Price: Keep a low profile. Let's stay out of trouble.

Marine: Jackson! Get your ass on the line now! We've got hostiles moving in from the north!
War Pig: Bravo Six, we're clear of the bog! Thanks for the assist. We'll roll down the left flank, and provide supporting fire. Out.

Marine 1: Enemy air assault! Get ready! They're moving up both our flanks!
Marine 2: Right flank! They're moving on our right flank!

War Pig (commander): Uh, Bravo Six? Possible ambush area up front. We'll uh, move up when you clear the area ahead of us.
Lt. Vasquez: Watch for silhouettes on the rooftops!
War Pig (commander): Marines, stand clear! We're gonna get some rounds into those buildings!
War Pig (loader): Up!
War Pig (commander): Gunner! Two story building! Second floor!
War Pig (gunner): Target acquired.
War Pig (commander): FIRE!

Command: Marines, we have a possible fix on Al-Asad in the capital city. Intel gathered by SAS indicates Al-Asad may have a Russian warhead. Speed is critical. Force Recon and Wild Weasel units have taken out most of the air defenses, but Al-Asad's ground forces still pose a serious threat.
Lt. Vasquez: Looks like we're rolling in with everything we've got. We get Al-Asad, and end this war right here, right now. Lock and load, marines!

Cpt. Pelayo:[2] Outlaw, this is Deadly, we'll take out the big targets. Mop up any troublemakers with the Mark 19.
Command: All call signs, this is overlook, we're seeing enemy armor in the palm grove west of the river.

Outlaw Two-Five: Command, this is Outlaw Two-Five, infantry are making a run for it. We are clear to land, over.
Command: Uh, roger that. Okay. Bachelor Two-Seven, lets get those Abrams to the front.
Marine: Down the ramps! Go! Go! Go!

Marine Captain: So you're our ride out of here?
Lt. Vasquez: We're it, captain! Let's move out before they regroup!

Cpt. Pelayo: We're hit, we're hit! I've lost the tail rotor! Mayday, mayday, this is Deadly going in hard! We're going down!
Outlaw Two-Five: We have a Cobra down. I repeat, we have a Cobra down.

Outlaw Two-Five: Command, I have a visual on the crash site. I see small arms fire coming from the cockpit. Request permission to initiate search and rescue.
Command: Copy 2-5, be advised, you will NOT be at a safe distance in the event that nuke goes off. Do you understand?
Outlaw Two-Five: Roger, we know what we're getting into.
Command: All right 2-5, it's your call. Retrieve that pilot if you can. Out.

Cpt. Pelayo: I'm here!... Keating is KIA! Hostiles moving in fast! I could sure use some help down here!
Outlaw Two-Five: Hold on, we're coming to ya.
Lt. Vasquez: We got 90 seconds, Jackson! Get the pilot! NO ONE gets left behind!
Lt. Vasquez: Jackson! Pull her out of there and get back to the LZ! Do it!
[Jackson pulls Pelayo out of the helicopter wreck]
Lt. Vasquez: Get to the Seaknight! We'll hold down these corners. Go!
Outlaw Two-Five: Lt. Vasquez, this is Outlaw Two-Five, now would be a good time to get the hell outta here, over.
Lt Vasquez: Roger that, we're on our way!
Command: Outlaw this is Command. We have a probable nuclear threat in the capital. Proceed to the minimum safe distance until the all clear is given by the NEST team.
[nuke goes off]

Nikolai: The man is a coward, Captain Price. Al-Asad would never sacrifice himself. There is a safehouse in Azerbaijan that Al-Asad has used in the past. I am sending you the coordinates.
Capt.Price: Understood, Nikolai. Gaz, assemble the team. We are going to Azerbaijan.
Gaz: Yes sir. I hear it's lovely this time of year...

Cpt. Price: There's Kamarov's man, let's go.
Russian Loyalist: Al-Asad is in the village. The Ultranationalists are protecting him.
Cpt. Price: Perfect. Move out.
[screams and gunshots are heard from the village]
Gaz: What the hell is going on up there?
Russian Loyalist: It's the Ultranationalists. They're killing the villagers.
Gaz: Yeah, well, not for long, they're not.

Cpt. Price: [interrogating Al-Asad] Why'd you do it? Where did you get the bomb?
Khaled Al-Asad: [shouts in Arabic]
Cpt. Price: Who then? Give me a name. A name! I WANT HIS NAME!
[Price punches Al-Asad a few times, when a cell-phone ring interrupts him.]
Gaz: Sir, it's his cell-phone.
[Price takes the phone and listens. A voice in Russian speaks, then hangs up. Price pauses, then turns and shoots Al-Asad.]
Gaz: Who was that, sir?
Cpt. Price: Zakhaev. Imran Zakhaev.

Sea Knight Pilot 1: Bravo Six, the LZ is too hot. We cannot land at the farm, I repeat we cannot land at the farm. We're picking up SAM sites all over these mountains!
Gaz: That's just great! Now where they gonna land now?!
Sea Knight Pilot 2: Bravo Six, we're getting a lot of enemy radar signatures, we'll try to land closer to the bottom of the hill to avoid a lock-on. Over.
Gaz: Oh, he's gotta be taking the piss! We just busted our arses to get to this LZ and now they want us to go all the way back down?!

SSgt. Griggs [about Al-Asad]: Well, we got that bastard.
Cpt. Price: Still, he's not the one responsible for killing your Marines. Sorry, mate.
Gaz: Imran Zakhaev, eh? That man's a ghost. Intel says he's gone underground.
Captain Price: Well I got a plan to find him.
SSgt. Griggs: I'm listening... [camera pans in on a young Russian man] ...daddy's boy!
Captain Price: Zakhaev's son. Commander of the Ultranationalist forces in the field... rotten apple doesn't fall far from the tree. The loyalist Kamarov has got a location on the kid.
SSgt. Griggs: Uh, and the little punk will know how to find Zakhaev?
Gaz: The sins of our fathers...
SSgt. Griggs: Heh, ain't it a bitch?

SSgt. Griggs: I was starting to think that you were gonna leave me behind.
Cpt. Price: That was my first thought, but your arse had all the C4.

[a blast door starts to open very slowly]
SSgt. Griggs: Oh, you gotta be shittin' me!
Cpt. Price: Gaz, can't you make it open faster?
Gaz: Negative, sir; but you can try pulling if it'll make you feel better.
Cpt. Price: Cheeky bastard...

Command: Primary exfil point has been compromised. Proceed to secondary extraction south of bridge. Enemy presence... substantial.
SSgt. Griggs: It's just too hot, man... but room temperature? Please. A beer should be ice cold.
Cpt. Price: A lager maybe. Or a glass of water like you drink. But a pint of stout?
SSgt. Griggs: I'm gonna have to school ya both when we get back stateside.
Gaz: Yeah, well, either way we're stopping by London first. And I'm buying.
SSgt. Griggs: Well, at least the world didn't end. Hit it.

[opening dialogue of the epilogue mission]
SAS 1: We're going deep, and we're going hard.
SAS 2: Surely you can't be serious...
SAS 1: I'm serious, and don't call me Shirley.[3]
