At first I wondered how an empty page rated a link from the main page. So I added some quotes. Then I checked the history, realized that the page once held quotes and was divided into sub-pages. I had thought they were just links back to Wikipedia. At the least I think the list needs to explain where the bulk of the quotes are. I think a case can be made for having a selection of quotes on this page because the presence of the quotes from the preface makes it look unfinished or at least very unbalanced and because the complete quotes pages for each book are so extensive and hard to read through. That depends more on how you see the project though and I would not be upset to see them removed from here. But it should be more obvious where the quotes are. Rmhermen 04:41, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Moving of quotes from the "Foreword"

I don't agree with the idea that the foreword should be given its own separate page. The Volumes themselves were given their own pages for reasons of length, and I can see a rationale to that, but the quotes from the foreword of the "second" edition were just a few general comments about the work as a whole, and I believe that they should remain here, behind the general links to the body of the work itself, because they were actually written years later, as is reflected by the very subject of the quotes, and there is simply no need for a separate page. ~ Achilles 13:03, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I concur. And there is another big change; see Talk:The Lord of the Rings (fandom) please. I don't think this type of fandom quotes passes our "notability" criteria. --Aphaia 20:08, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Note that I didn't introduce the "fandom" quote, I just created a new section for them. But I agree that removing them (well, it, there's only one of them) is probably a much better move. About the foreword page I don't feel strongly either way. Jhi

Since this article has been added to Wikiquote:Good entries, I have been ruthless about restructuring and noting its sourcing failures. Most of the "sources" provided are too vague for any reasonable attempt at verifying them. I've also marked the "Forward to the Second Edition" section because a work as popular as LoTR probably has many editions and printings that include this forward, so we should have some specifics on at least one of them. I'm also concerned about the use of the term "portal", as we have no standards for such things here, but I'm more worried about the basics for now.

"Good articles" ought to be the best examples of well-formatted, well-sourced articles. Just as with Wikipedia's good- and featured-article system, nomination to this list should be a positive encouragement for improving articles to our highest standards (as opposed to Wikiquote's more traditional negative encouragement of VfD nomination). ~ Jeff Q (talk) 15:38, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
